Revista AU - 200 - Arquitetura Ainda que Tardia

11.01.2010

The report of November’s 2010 “AU Magazine” published an article by the architect Fernando Lara, about slum upgrades. “Horizontes Arquitetura’s” designs in two favelas (Morro das Pedras and Pedreira Prado Lopes) featured prominently. The text compares the experience of Brazil and other Latin American countries, and stresses the importance of Governs presence and actuation on these sites, and the need to develop the potential of the slums through good architecture.

Korean Institute of Architects Journal

06.01.2009

The Journal of the South Korean’s Institute of Architects has published a special article about the architecture of Minas Gerais, by the architect Fernando Luiz Lara (PhD, assistant professor at the University of Texas).

The article discusses the history of Belo Horizonte’s creation, with its modern ideals, and how this provided a revolution in Brazilian architecture of the early twentieth century.

Fernando Lara presented a new generation of architects from Minas Gerais, highlighting the social housing projects and intervention in favelas made by ‘Horizontes Arquitetura”.

“(…) With a strong commitment to public works and client’s participation, Horizontes is already carving its place in Minas Gerais architecture despite being so young. Addressing the urgent need for better housing in a country famous for its inequality, Horizontes has managed to elevate the current discourse on public works such as parks and housing complexes for the poorest, by challenging the traditional ways of building using a rigorous albeit experimental design approach. The current city hall focus on favela’s infrastructure projects has awarded a number of young designers an invaluable opportunity to manifest and test their ideas. (…)”
